The Totnes Market Project is one of the most challenging and rewarding projects I have done to date. It is still very much a work in progress and I hope to exhibit this work sometime in the future under this name.
I have known Totnes Market for many years and at times have even been a market stall holder myself. There is a unique energy amongst the market stall holders that is very open and generous.
All of these portraits were painted on the market in two sessions of two hours each, while business was going on. My aim was and is to capture the unique energy of the market and some of the personalities that make it what it is. Since spontaneity is what is required all paintings are done with acrylic on paper.
I need to add that it has been a true privilege to paint every one of the people you see here, and to bond with them through their characters, philosophies, stories and humour.
