CHAOS PATTERNS

The Term 'chaos' applies only relative to our own perception. Where we cannot discern any structure we assume chaos. The following patterns are central symmetries. That is, they have a centre around which all shapes and forms are arranged in a uniform fashion. Central symmetries are very easy to make out. They are obvious to our perception. The shapes of which these symmetries are made up are either based on angles derived from a pentagon [5] or from a Heptagon [7]. Thus these patterns do not relate to a grid which is based on straight numbers, ie 4.

For instance the image on the left is a central symmetry based on the angles of a pentagon. It seems slightly confusing to the untrained eye, yet it's harmonious structure is instantly recognizable. The close observer will see the clusters of shapes that form this pattern.

However, when we look at just a section of this pattern, the arragement of shapes seems chaotic, almost random, despite our ability to recognize the individual shapes. This is similar to our view of the world around us.

If we could look at the universe from an objective point of view, that is from an 'outside' then we would see it's symmetry and harmonious arrangement. In fact, we can see that within nature there are symmetries of great harmony such as the petal of a flower or a chystal but most of the time our perspective does not allow us to see such symmetry, which is when nature appears 'chaotic'. The reason that we see such a great amount of chaos is due to the vastness and complexity of the pattern of which we are a part. I support the view that our own world repeats itself endlessly within this gigantic pattern but that we are infinitely far away from being able to observe this.

The following two patterns are based on angles found in a heptagon [7]. Immeadiately the structure appears a lot more complex. The first pattern is colour coded so that the rings of clusters of which it is made up contain three main colours. The second pattern is colour coded so that the same rings contain five colour coding. Observe how much more complex the second pattern appears. How it seems to virtually 'explode'. Undeniably only very few people would be able to discern from the following caption that this is part of a central symmetry:

Patterns therefore do not just appear chaotic because two patterns form interferences but also because the pattern itself is based on an unusual format and complex structuring.

The fact, that complex patterns of this nature can simulate a sensation of space suggests that movement could be discribed as a shift in perspective of something that is essentially static, such as a complex symmetry.

When looking at these symmetries one might get the impression that there is a centre to what we see. This is true of this section of the pattern. But we could rotate and overlap this cluster to form a ring and then fill the remaining spaces with similar clusters to form a much bigger pattern of which the symmetries displayed here are merely an outer cluster. Thus there might be a centre to ones perception but there is none in the object perceived.

Equally, any chaotic structure, such as our own universe, could be turned into a central symmetry by being used as a part of a cluster. If the universe is indeed infinite, then it is very likely that there is a vantage point from which this is true. But as I have said, such a vantage point is many, many universes away from us. It would, in fact, require a galactic zoom that would defy all our concepts of time and space. (Interestingly such a zoom would follow some kind of curved line, probably in a spiralling movement.).

Meditating these patterns may be a helpful way of enhancing one's ability to orientate in environments that appear 'chaotic'. When I was on the Swiss Alp I noticed that my perception was conditioned to orientate along (straight) lines within my perception in the city. Standing on a steep hill interfered with my sense of balance. I believe that meditating patterns like these may help to recondition the brain. Maybe in the future I will post a pure grid, as this may be more condusive for such meditation.
