There is so much talk about immigration at the moment. In a sense I am an immigrant as well and all of my life I have benefited from the presence of immigrants, their ideas, their views and concepts. This is a point I feel is often lost in the discussion about immigration. Culture is wealth, it creates wealth. In a world where ideas and new concepts have become key economical assets, it seems ludicrous that we should allow a debate that underestimates the benefit that comes from contact with other cultures. Why does no one seem to stand up and say that we would not be where we are today, that we would not enjoy the wealth and comfort we have become accustomed to, that we would not have the freedoms we know, if it had not been for the not always easy exposure to other cultures. What greater asset is there to any culture and society than the cultural diversity it knows to accommodate? When has there ever been a time of lasting prosperity that did not involve such cultural diversity?
